Inverrary golf course in Lauderhill, FL

When you step onto the balcony of 7050 NW 44th St #708 at Horizons of Inverrary, you are looking at more than green space. You are looking at one of the most storied pieces of land in South Florida golf, and at the next chapter it is about to write.

1970: A World-Class Golf Destination Is Born

Inverrary Country Club opened in 1970 with two 18-hole courses, East and West, both designed by legendary architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. The club spread across roughly 292 acres in the heart of Lauderhill, northwest of Fort Lauderdale, and almost overnight put the city on the national golf map.

The Gleason Years

Comedian and actor Jackie Gleason lived on the club grounds and lent his name to the tournament that made Inverrary famous: the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic. Over the decades, the East Course hosted 15 PGA and LPGA events, including the 1976 Tournament Players Championship, the tournament that grew into The Honda Classic, and the LPGA's Phar-Mor at Inverrary. Names like Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Johnny Miller all played here.

2020: The Courses Close

Like many Florida golf clubs, Inverrary struggled as the number of courses outpaced demand. The owners announced in 2019 that the club would close, and both courses shut down for good in 2020. For a few years, the future of the land was an open question for the thousands of condo and homeowners who surround it.

Today: The New Inverrary

Rendering of the planned New Inverrary clubhouse

That question now has an answer. The New Inverrary master plan, approved by the Lauderhill City Commission, calls for:

  • An 18-hole Greg Norman Signature golf course
  • A new clubhouse with a restaurant, grab-and-go cafe, pro shop, driving range and practice area
  • More than 160 acres of greenways, including a multi-use promenade for walking and biking and a dog park
  • Upgraded community security technology
  • A planned enclave of new Pulte townhomes and single-family homes

For owners in the condo communities that ring the course, like Horizons of Inverrary, the plan turns an uncertain view into a revitalized one.
