Plantation sits in the center of Broward County, directly west of Fort Lauderdale. The city was incorporated in 1953 after founder Frederick Peters laid out a master plan with minimum lot sizes and a rule that neighboring homes shouldn't look alike, which is why so many older Plantation streets feel spacious and varied. Today it covers about 22 square miles, is home to more than 94,000 residents, and has been named a Tree City USA for over 35 years running.
Plantation is bordered by State Road 7, Sunrise Boulevard, Flamingo Road and I-595, with quick access to I-95, Florida's Turnpike, I-75 and the Sawgrass Expressway. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is about 15 minutes away, traffic permitting.
The Midtown district along Broward Blvd and University Drive is the city's commercial hub, with Westfield Broward Mall, The Fountains and Plantation Walk, a mixed-use center of shops, restaurants, offices and apartments on the site of the former Fashion Mall. Sawgrass Mills is a short drive west. Hospitals, medical offices and everyday shopping are close to every neighborhood.
Plantation has its own police and fire departments, the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library, a historical museum and year-round events, including the annual Veterans Memorial Event at Veterans Park. The city's Technology Park is home to nearly 200 businesses. Learn more on the City of Plantation website.
Golfers can play the city-owned Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club or join private Lago Mar Country Club, and riders can use the city's Plantation Equestrian Center in Plantation Acres.
