Southwest Ranches is a small, semi-rural town of about 7,800 residents in roughly 2,150 to 2,300 households (about 2,300 homes in all), on the eastern edge of the Everglades, about 15 miles southwest of Fort Lauderdale. Residents incorporated it on June 6, 2000, to protect a country way of life, and the town motto, "Preserving Our Rural Lifestyle," still guides how it grows.
Zoning is almost entirely rural residential and agricultural, so you will find horse farms, nurseries and estate homes rather than dense subdivisions. Town rules generally keep out streetlights and sidewalks, which gives the roads their quiet, open feel.
